Philippe Colin, Chassage-Montrachet, Les Chenes, rouge 2016
Based in spacious new premises on the outskirts of Chassagne, Philippe Colin is very much a chip off the old block – his father being the renowned Michel Colin-Deléger. He makes wines of energy and precision, never over-oaked, and with plenty of concentration behind them.
Les Chênes lies just below premier cru La Maltroie, and Philippe owns 1.6 hectares, with vines averaging forty-three years of age. Grass is planted between the rows to reduce humidity in the vineyard, and the grapes are hand-picked.
All the bunches were destemmed and then given four to five days cold maceration at 10-12°C. Fermentation took place for about fifteen to twenty days with maximum temperature of 32°C; the wine was aged in thirty percent new oak and no racking was done until bottling.
90 Wine Spectator
The flavors of black cherry and blackberry are reticent despite the lush texture in this opulent red. The tannins lean toward the rustic side, and this finishes long and saturated by fruit and spice. Best from 2020 through 2029. (BS) 11/2018
