Giacosa Riservas and Cappellano Francos (Hearth Restaurant, NYC): [Double-decanted at 1:30pm for half an hour.] Nose of dark red fruits. Long, rich, juicy, complex, tannic. A great wine, still not at full maturity. Still, a joy to drink. Interesting comparison with the 1990 that has reached maturity. I would give this another decade to reach full maturity. 98-100 5/16/2024

From magnum. Wow! Gorgeous nose with classic notes of roses, tar, cherries, and strawberries. Good acidity and still quite structured (much more so than the 2000 next to it), lovely fruit, and cherry notes. Very long finish. Outstanding wine that still feels on the upswing, especially from magnum. Amazing experience! 2/29/2024

The 1996 Barolo Falletto de Serralunga (Red Label Riserva) possesses extraordinary presence and stature. Dark garnet/ruby-colored, it offers a tight but promising nose of road tar, scorched earth, truffles, blackberries, cherries, and espresso. This muscular, massive wine gave me chills. It is an exquisite, virtually perfect Barolo that requires a decade of cellaring, and should last for 30-40 years. I remember wishing I were twenty years younger when I tasted it prior to bottling ... I still feel the same way. Awesome! Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040. (RP) 06/2001
