Muga, Rioja, Prado Enea, Gran Reserva 1995

Drank at our Spanish wine dinner Wednesday nite, alongside a 2006 and 2009. This 1995 is incredibly still drinking well, and is just a lovely mature wine. Generous nose exudes aromas of red berries, and dried fruit. Medium body, still with plenty of red fruit, along with notes of green pepper, earth and smoke. Some mushroom and perhaps some barnyard here. Pleasingly long & elegant finish. At 28 years of age, this wine continues to shine (and certainly outshone its younger sibs each of which requires more bottle age, particularly the 2009) 12/22/2023
The 1995 Prado Enea Gran Reserva effortlessly combines elegance and power. It is close to its peak and should drink well for another 10-15 years. (JM) (6/2010)
(aged for a year in large oak vats, then four years in smaller barrels) Medium brick-edged red. Incredibly complex, ethereal aromas of raspberry, currant, tobacco, tar and smoke, with an element of dried fruits. Like an essence of Rioja in the mouth: suave, complex and gripping. Dried berry and plum flavors complemented by smoke and coconut from the oak. Reminded me of a Lopez de Heredia wine but with more body. The wine's firm structure is perfectly buffered by flesh. Very ripe and very long on the aftertaste. Up there with the great 1991 in quality. (7/2003)
